Effective therapy depends on serving the whole person.Disability is a part, but not the sum of who we are.
Dr. Jennifer Gibson is a leading psychologist serving individuals with disabilities and the professionals who work with them. Beginning with a family becoming aware of their baby’s disability, to individuals who age into disability, she supports clients in living with disability, and dealing with societal challenges, while pursuing productive, meaningful lives. She draws from her personal experiences of living with Cerebral Palsy, with insight and humor to facilitate positive change for clients and their families.
“I assist individuals and families living with disabilities to challenge the obstacles presented by society in critical areas such as education, health care, and the workplace. I work with them to build self-esteem and advocacy skills to assist in removing barriers so they can fully engage in life and realize their full potential.”
A widely published author and researcher, Dr. Gibson has created a national model for disability identity development based on more than 20 years of working with individuals with disabilities. Her model provides insight into a person’s inner perception about their disability, and how they navigate in the world.
“Society creates barriers that limit what people can, or think they can accomplish. I facilitate my clients’ motivation, challenge the negative messages they internalize from society, and expand their understanding of what they can achieve. My approach is to actively engage with my clients, sharing my experiences whenever it’s helpful to the therapeutic process.”
